Two ways to change the colour
Blonding and tinting
Sanding decides how smooth a floor is. Finishing decides what colour it ends up, and that is the part people actually see.
Going lighter
Blonding
A whitening treatment worked into the bare timber before the coating goes on. New Zealand natives like rimu and matai naturally pull golden to red under a clear finish; blonding holds them back towards a paler, cooler, more Scandinavian look.
It is not paint and it is not a cover-up. The grain still shows through - that is the whole point of it.
Going darker, warmer or greyer
Tinting
Colour introduced at the finishing stage to shift the tone of the floor - warmer, darker, or knocked back towards grey.
Timber takes colour unevenly by nature, so the same tint reads quite differently on rimu than it does on pine. This is one to judge from a sample on your own boards rather than from a card.
A new floor over an old one
Tongue and groove overlaying
Where an existing floor is past saving, or where there is no timber floor to start with, a tongue and groove overlay lays a new timber floor over the existing substrate. It is then sanded and finished exactly as any other timber floor would be.
It is worth considering when the boards underneath have been sanded too many times already, when a floor has been badly patched over the years, or simply where a concrete or particle board subfloor needs to become a timber one.

Three things decide how a floor looks
The timber itself
Its natural colour and grain set the starting point, and no finish overrides that entirely. Rimu will never look like oak.
How much the coating ambers
Solvent-based finishes warm and deepen with age; water-based ones stay close to the bare timber. This is usually the biggest single factor.
The sheen
Gloss, satin or matt changes how much light the floor throws back, and how forgiving it is about marks. See floor coating.

Questions we get asked
Can I see what it will look like first?
On your own floor, yes, and that is the only sample worth trusting. A sample board of somebody else's timber tells you very little - your boards have their own colour, their own age and their own light coming through the window.
Does blonding wear off?
No. It goes into the bare timber and then the coating goes over the top of it, so it wears at exactly the rate the coating does. Look after the finish and the colour looks after itself.
Can you match a new floor to an existing one?
Close, usually. Exact, rarely - and anyone who promises exact has not looked at the floor. Timber varies board to board, and an existing floor has years of light and wear on it that new timber has not had yet.
Where an extension meets an original floor, a threshold or a change of direction often looks better than a near-match that is not quite right.
Our floor is very dark. Can it be lightened?
Often, and more than people expect. A lot of what reads as dark timber is actually an old ambered finish plus decades of grime sitting on top of it, and sanding takes all of that off.
If it needs to go paler still, blonding takes it further. What we cannot do is lighten the timber's own natural colour beyond a point - we will tell you where that point is when we look.
Do you do commercial floors as well?
Yes - commercial, residential and agricultural. The products and the sheen choice change for a floor that takes heavy traffic, but the process is the same.
